Wooden fences are a constant fixture in the yard and last for many years with proper maintenance. Care for wooden fences is among the things one can do without outside help. The reason for this is that a lot of experience and knowledge is not needed in the work involved. Fixing any part that has been damaged, applying stain or paint to enhance durability, and cleaning is part of maintenance.
A person should do everything in the right manner when it gets to cleaning wooden fences. Applying appropriate cleaner is the first stage of the procedure. A brush is used to apply the solution from down upwards, making sure that the whole surface is covered. By plunging the brush into the cleaner then smearing in between boards, the solution gets into tight spaces. The instructions about application must be followed closely.
The next action in line is to allow the cleaner to soak into the wood for about 15 to 20 minutes. This time should be enough for the solution to penetrate the wood before it is washed off. However, the exact soaking time that the solution should be left on the boards is normally indicated in the application instructions label.
Thorough rinsing by use of a pressure washer should follow after soaking. One should keep the water pressure at around 2700 PSI or lower so that the boards can be protected from damage. A distance of two feet should be maintained away from the fence when rinsing. One should maintain an up and down movement until the cleaner is rinsed off completely. One should then let the fencing to dry completely before applying paint or stain and then use a polyurethane sealant to seal it.
Rust is the key weakness of iron fencing which can shorten the lifespan of iron fences and rapidly compromise their structural integrity. Maintenance of fences in places with great levels of moisture should be done twice a year. Preparation of the working area is the first step in maintenance process, which involves eliminating any foreign material that may have developed on the fence.
A wire brush should then be used to remove any traces of rust forming on its surfaces. To avoid ruining the integrity of the structure heavy corded wire brushes should not be used. One should then do a thorough rinsing of the bars using a solution of nonionic detergent and water. After drying a rust converter should be applied on all rusted areas.
One should apply oil-based primer coat and then let it dry. Oil-based paints of the same color should be applied next. Finally, thin wax layers have to be applied. Water and soap should be used to clean the fencing after each six months. Every missing hinge and fastener must be lubricated and replaced.
