When it comes to extreme recreation or sports, sky diving is often the first which comes to mind. While this is the case, hang gliding is a recreation and sport that has been around much longer than the first airplane or sky diver. For, the Chinese had began to build kites at the end of the sixth century A. D. The gliders of that time were aerodynamic and strong enough to hold a person of average size with most flights taking place in China or France. Currently, Hang Gliding North Carolina offers some of the best opportunities whether gliding for recreation or sport in the United States.
The Chinese began to build kites which had the ability to carry people toward the end of the 6th century. While this is the case, gliding at that time was still strong and aerodynamic. Most of the first flights to take place on the kites were based out of China and France.
The first gliders which could be controlled were built in the 1890s by Otto Lillenthal. Otto used the glider to soar off ridges, cliffs and small hills. Later, Otto documented the trips and work which had been done to create the glider. As a result, Lillenthal is now considered one of the first major figures in aviation.
Later, in 1904, Jan Lavezzari became the first to experience double sail gliding. While this is the case, Jan had to use much stiffer and more flexible wings. One of the most historic flights for Lavezzari was to fly a double lateen sail glider off Berck, France.
Of all the gliders, the most popular remains that of the biplane model. For, this glider was publicized heavily in a number of periodicals and newspapers. Shortly after the mass advertising campaign, a man by the name of Charles S. Bates wrote an article related to the activity and past and present models. In addition, Bates included the instructions for building a VJ-11, a glider with foot launch capability which is built on a triple axis.
Modern day gliders use two type of materials for a single or double sail. These materials include woven polyester fabrics, and laminated fabrics made up of a combination of various materials and woven polyester fabrics. Whichever materials are used, it is important the cloths and materials are free of holes, tears or other damage to assure a safe, fun and well controlled flight.
Laminated materials which also use polyester film often achieve the best performance by using material which is better at maintaining the shape of a sail. Whereas, woven polyester sailcloth consist of a tightly woven weave of small polyester fibers which have been stabilized by the process of impregnating the weave with a polyester resin.
As with sky diving, hang gliding can either be a sport or a recreational activity. Due to the feel of flying like a bird or airplane through the air, fewer people are into sky diving than gliding. In either case, it is important that those participating in either activity have the knowledge and understanding necessary to properly control gliders or, in the case of sky diving, launch parachutes.
