When it comes to extreme recreation or sports, sky diving is often the first which comes to mind. While this is the case, hang gliding is a recreation and sport that has been around much longer than the first airplane or sky diver. Of all the gliders, the most popular remains that of the biplane model. For, this glider was publicized heavily in a number of periodicals and newspapers. Shortly after the mass advertising campaign, a man by the name of Charles S. Bates wrote an article related to the activity and past and present models. In addition, Bates included the instructions for building a VJ-11, a glider with foot launch capability which is built on a triple axis.
Modern day gliders use two type of materials for a single or double sail. These materials include woven polyester fabrics, and laminated fabrics made up of a combination of various materials and woven polyester fabrics. Whichever materials are used, it is important the cloths and materials are free of holes, tears or other damage to assure a safe, fun and well controlled flight.
Laminated materials which also use polyester film often achieve the best performance by using material which is better at maintaining the shape of a sail. Whereas, woven polyester sailcloth consist of a tightly woven weave of small polyester fibers which have been stabilized by the process of impregnating the weave with a polyester resin.
