The best way to find one is to ask your veterinarian or friends who have pets for recommendations. There may be people who do it occasionally, like I do, just not as a business. Some sitters will advertise in the yellow pages or newspapers. Most will leave flyers or business cards with veterinarians.
The first step is to seek out a reputable professional animal carer, which can be either an individual or a business. Often the best way of finding a good carer is to acquire his, or her, name through somebody you already know, subsequently, you can be sure that the animal carer is trustworthy and genuine. If you are unable to find an animal carer through your contacts, it is beneficial to make inquiries at your local veterinarian who is likely to be able to put you in touch with highly regarded carers in your area.
Before arranging a meeting with an animal carer, establish exactly what duties you require him, or her, to perform and how frequently you need these tasks carried out. For example, some carers will visit an animal once per day for twenty to thirty minutes. However, dogs may need more regular visits. You may find it helpful to draw up a list of the chores you would like the carer to fulfill, as this can be discussed at the meeting.
Dog sitters won't cost you any guilt! You never have to impose on friends, family or neighbors again. They may do a good job of taking care of your dog but are they trained to respond to an emergency with him or your home? Are they insured and bonded in case something goes wrong. No more unneeded immunization! Most kennels need a list of them for the dog, irrespective of what your personal vet recommends for your individual animal. Unnecessary vaccinations can actually increase his risk of developing allergies and pose dangerous health risks. Many vaccinations for the dog stay with them for their lifetime.
Pet carers are not required to have any special licensing, but those who have gone to the trouble of acquiring accreditation from one of the carer organizations show a high degree of professionalism in my opinion. They will have been required to take a course that usually includes business management, animal care and animal health instruction
You will want to leave phone numbers for where you can be reached, as well as a friend or neighbor who might be able to answer questions or help out in emergencies. Provide the sitter with the name, address and phone number of your veterinarian, and leave a signed letter giving permission for necessary medical procedures to be preformed. Additionally, make sure you have a way to reach the sitter at all times, in case something comes up. The sitter should also have a backup plan in case he or she is unable to attend to your pets for some reason. If not, you had better make a backup plan of your own.
Obviously, leaving an animal for any reason can be extremely stressful for both you and your pets. Therefore, there is importantance in relieving as much anxiety as possible. By ensuring that you have found a great pet sitter whom you can trust, you will be able to leave your pet knowing that he, or she, is in safe hands.
