The natural reservoir of the Ebola virus could be bats, including species of dogfish Égypte33. Zaire ebolavirus of antibodies were detected in the serum of three species of tropical fruit bats: Hypsignathus monstrosus34, Epomops franqueti35 and Myonycteris torquata36. However, the virus has never been detected in these animaux37. If the fruit bats of the family Pteropodidae is likely the natural reservoir of the virus Ebola38,39, we found genetic elements in the genome of filoviruses some small rodents, insectivorous bats, shrews, or of tenrecidés marsupiaux40 of which tend to prove an interaction of several tens of millions of years between these animals and filoviruses.
Bats are healthy carriers and thus contribute significantly to the natural reservoir of the Ebola virus. Previously thought they were contaminating another animal before the virus reaches the human population first, but they could also infect humans directly, according to the IRD, in certain circumstances, bats could indeed directly transmit Ebola in homme41.
Domestic pigs are susceptible to infection by Ebola virus muqueuses42. They then developed a severe respiratory illness that can be mistaken for other porcine respiratory diseases associated with shedding of high viral load in the environment, exposing healthy pigs infection42
